Our passion is to connect youth to nature. We help them improve in school, stay off the streets and out of gangs. It’s a great place to have fun and explore.
Through STEAM, marine science exploration, water sports, environmental education and fishing, we offer them a sanctuary for healing. They find a space to learn how to react to life’s challenges. They develop life skills to empower them to build a better future.
Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs, In-school, Out of School…
Mahogany Youth has a mentoring program titled “Teach a Child to Fish” . This program has been changing children’s lives over 25 years. MYC has delivered a high quality science focused program in South Florida that includes fishing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, high, nature experiences, and intensive scientific research in the fields of Marine Biology and Plant Ecology with an emphasis on Sponge, Fish, and Water Quality research.
We teach them tools to stay in school, resist drugs, and gang violence. Every day there is a curriculum that teaches life skills like critical thinking, goal setting, role-playing positive behavior and how to self manage.
The kids improve their reading and comprehension through our classroom reading and workbooks. They exercise and have outdoor movement for the kids to improve their health, teaching a skill that can provide protein for the table, teaching scientific research methodology to improve their classroom performance, literacy training, working with the kids to improve their reading and comprehension. They also do acting and role-playing for the drug and gang resistance-behavior modeling adding the arts and cultural skills. We find that all children respond to nature and encouragement. Our program addresses each of these issues and teaches critical thinking skills.
You help provide an opportunity for positive youth development through the introduction of personal self-management skills, general social skills, and drug resistance skills curriculum.
MYC has identified the following high-risk behaviors to be problems for teenagers in their neighborhoods: dangerous or reckless driving; marijuana, alcohol, and other drug use; tobacco use, delinquent behavior, including gangs and fighting; and sexual activity. One of the highest priorities identified was services for positive youth development and adolescent risk prevention. Our program addresses each of these issues in the classroom and teaches critical thinking skills to mitigate environmental impacts from their neighborhoods
Environmental education is taught by implementing best practices in fishing including recycling and underwater studies, we push for sustainability and teach our youth to practice and advocate to legislators to protect marine habitats.
Participants of our program become teens and adults who return to teach. They mentor the next generation of kids providing the skills to be successful in school, demonstrating life skills and fishing.

Our programs are designed to engage our participants at every level.
STEAM is at the heart of our programs.
Our Saturday fishing trips are safe places where students are protected fed and healed.
We have connected thousands of youth to nature through swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and safe boating.
We teach kids even from a young age the fundamentals that go with being a good fisherman or fisherwoman. They learn to respect the environment, use and maintain their equipment and to leave habitats as untouched as possible.
Many of our participants are from marginalized communities where drugs, gang violence and poverty are prevalent. Our programs fills in the time between home and school to enrich and protect kids from those gaps.
We believe in the importance of education in addition to life skills. Through lessons in sustainability and stewardship, we amplify youth's knowledge with STEAM opportunities. Fishing just serves as the "HOOK" to get them excited about learning.
